'American Idol' Host Ryan Seacrest Prepping His Own Singing Show

New NBC show will reportedly be more 'artist competitive' than 'contestant competitive.'
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Frazer Harrison/WireImage

For nearly a decade, Ryan Seacrest has been the steady, reliable face of "American Idol." He's weathered the storm of judge changes, questionable champions and a nonstop barrage of abuse from former lead panelist Simon Cowell.

During that time, Seacrest's media empire has blossomed to include not just multiple radio and TV hosting gigs, but producer credits on a slew of reality shows, like "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and its offshoots, that have minted their own stars. Now, Seacrest is reportedly embarking on his highest-profile TV move to date.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Seacrest is in early talks with NBC to helm a music-themed prime-time reality show. But unlike "Idol" or tormentor Cowell's upcoming "X Factor" (or new competition, NBC's "The Voice"), the new Ryan Seacrest Productions joint is reportedly not a traditional music competition show.

At press time, it was not clear if Seacrest would act as host of the new show, and because the plan is so early in its stages, the exact concept of the program is still being fleshed out. The Reporter said the only thing that's known is that Seacrest's new show would not directly compete with "Idol," which pays him $15 million a year and continues to be TV's undisputed ratings champ.

As for when this unnamed show might debut, the trade magazine pointed out that Seacrest's contract with "Idol" parent company CKX — which expires at the end of next season — doesn't allow him to appear on any other broadcast network until 2012.

The New York Post, which broke the story on Monday, quoted NBC's head of alternative programming as saying that the Seacrest concept is a "totally different kind of competition show" that would unfold in "self-contained episodes." He said it was "a bit more fun" and rather than being "contestant competitive," it is more "artist competitive."

In an interview with the Reporter in late March, Seacrest stressed, "It doesn't make a lot of sense to host a show competing with 'Idol.' ... I think it's possible [to be the face of another show in the future], but at this point I certainly have not even gone down that road because 'Idol' is in a great place, so I think we're just enjoying that and we want to focus on that."

In addition to his multiple shows starring the Kardashian sisters and ABC's "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution," the new music-themed NBC show would be one of 20 programs RSP has in development at the moment, many of them with NBCUniversal.

Don't miss "Idol Party Live" every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! TV on the Radio's Gerard Smith Dies at 36

Gerard Smith, who played keyboards and bass for the celebrated prog-rock band TV on the Radio, died yesterday from lung cancer. He was 36.

Smith joined the Brooklyn band around 2004 and played on 2006's Return to Cookie Mountain and 2008's Dear Science, two of the most challenging and rewarding recent records in all of indie rock. He also appeared on this month's Nine Types of Light, receiving his cancer diagnosis shortly after the quintet wrapped recording.

"We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer," TVOTR wrote on their website. "Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly."

Spin music editor Charles Aaron remembered Smith as "a classy, thoughtful guy and he always seemed kind of bemused by the rock 'n' roll thing." Though he didn't write any of the band's songs, Smith "was very serious about TV on the Radio," Aaron said, "and was adamant about not letting people define them as 'black rock' or concede that 'blackness' was the essential quality of the band." The reason for that perception was that Smith was one of four black members of TVOTR, with Dave Sitek the group's sole white player.

Because of his illness, Smith did not go on tour with the rest of the group to promote Nine Types of Light, and because of the sudden news about his passing the band canceled five shows, including last night's scheduled gig in Chicago.

How Little Old Me Almost Threw The Canadian Election

ignatieff.jpg

Toronto Star:

Facing charges of political sabotage by the powerful head of Sun Media Corporation, the Conservative Party has denied wrongdoing but cut ties with a key political strategist.

The move was made to distance the Stephen Harper campaign from what Sun Media mogul Pierre Karl Peladeau claimed was a dirty trick the leak of an incriminating photo and damaging information that said Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff had aided U.S. military planners in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq invasion. The photo, forwarded to Sun Media vice-president Kory Teneycke another former Harper aide wasnt of Ignatieff.

Er, seeing as I might have accidentally authored this meme, I think I should comment.

In early 2009, Michael Ignatieff had been, or was about to be installed as Liberal leader (I’m too lazy to look up the exact dates). I was doing an image search for something (I can’t remember exactly what), and came across the above picture. I noted that the soldier in the middle was a dead ringer for Iggy (the photo appeared on a military-themed collection of images with no indication of their nationality or where they were taken). I thought they were most likely Americans (or possibly Brits). So I decided to make up a little story about Ignatieff and his rather muscular approach to foreign affairs.

The original post is here. You can see that I pretty obviously intended it as a joke (if there’s any doubt, click on the “enhanced” popup that I included with it).

Anyway, it went over about as well as Guy Earle’s act. I soon forgot about it, until I got an email about this time last year from a woman who I assumed was a Conservative Party researcher:

My name is _____ _______. I am a biographical researcher and I am preparing a narrative on Michael Ignatieff.

I came across a photo on your blog which appears to be Ignatieff and a group of U.S. soldiers wearing Santa Claus hats:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/35393854@N00/3315099894/

Can you share any details with me - is it authentic, where did it originate, etc - or direct me to a reliable source?

To which I replied:

Hi, ______:

No, it was just some random photo that I came across in a Google Image Search. The guy in the middle looked like Iggy, so I decided to have some fun with it.

I don’t think she saw it on my blog, but rather on my Flickr photostream. Now, I have no real idea if this is where the whole thing started, or if our wires got crossed and the photo was assumed to be genuine; but let’s pretend it did.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

NB: Please note, as there has been some confusion, this is a post by my talented co-blogger Quebec-based Gnotalex not by AID.

Diggy Simmons Says His First Single's About To 'Do Damage'

'As I evolved, just the wordplay, the content, everything, I just keep getting better,' son of Rev Run tells MTV News at Bamboozle fest.
By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Rob Markman

Diggy Simmons
Photo: MTV News

The 2011 Bamboozle Festival went down over the weekend and featured both established and flourishing hip-hop acts, from Lil Wayne to Wiz Khalifa. Another flourishing MC on the bill who's still getting his feet wet but packs plenty of great expectations was Diggy Simmons.

Diggy inked a recording deal with Atlantic Records last year and plans to release his first official single this month. MTV News caught up with the 16-year-old rap prodigy and son of Rev Run after his set to squeeze some info out of him about his upcoming debut album.

"I can't really say any detail on it yet," Diggy told us at Bamboozle. "But premeditating, I wanna keep it humble but it's gonna do damage to the summer, that's what I'mma say."

The teenaged MC was hush about the title of the lead single, adding that, "We're still thinking about the name of the album." The "Run's House" star did share that during the summer months, he plans to put the finishing touches on his debut, which he says is 70 to 80 percent done. He'll also be hitting the road as part of the Scream Tour starting July 13.

Diggy expressed pleasure at how his fans have been reacting at shows and to the music he's been releasing.

"People they say when they're down, they can relate to it," he said. "It'll lift their spirits up or they can just have fun with it. They just love it and that's what I love because it comes from my heart. I don't talk about nothing I don't do, man. I don't talk about nothing that's not real. I talk about my life, so the fact that they really connect with it and love it, it makes my life, man."

Fans got to see Diggy's development as an artist, learning he could rhyme, on MTV's "Run's House," to watching him become a top hip-hop prospect with a cover spot on XXL magazine's 2011 Freshmen issue. "As I get older, I got more to talk about," Diggy explained. "As I evolved, just the wordplay, the content, everything, I just keep getting better and better song-wise, format-wise. The album, it's nothing compared to the mixtapes and what I have out now. It's at a different level."

Of his Bamboozle performance, Diggy said, "It's a blessing that people really mess with me," and he to keep rocking stages and winning over more fans along the way.

"The crowd, I just really had them and they were open to me as soon as I walked on the stage. That type of stuff, it doesn't even get my head big and gas me, it humbles me, 'cause I'm like, 'Wow.' It just makes me feel good that people mess with me like that."

Are you excited for Diggy's debut album? Tell us in the comments!

Steven Tyler To Debut Solo Video On 'American Idol' May 12

Clip for judge's '(It) Feels So Good' was directed by Ray Kay.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage.com

Steven Tyler has made it clear all along that he intends to make "American Idol" work for him. Though his Aerosmith bandmates questioned his decision to appear on TV's #1 reality show, Tyler has been savvy about his unlikely gig, making sure to place the band's music in multiple episodes, which has helped their catalog creep back onto the Billboard charts while keeping their name in the press.

Now, seeing how the "Idol" bully pulpit has helped fellow newbie judge Jennifer Lopez reboot her musical career thanks to the show's debut of her video for "On the Floor", Tyler is prepping his own turn in the spotlight.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 63-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will premiere the video for his debut solo single, "(It) Feels So Good," on the May 12 episode of "Idol." The song will get its radio debut Monday on "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM morning radio show. Though "Idol" sources would not confirm the report for MTV News, unnamed sources told the Reporter that the video would air on the elimination episode that will reveal this season's top three.

The video for the song, written by Tyler and frequent Aerosmith collaborator songwriter Marti Frederiksen, was shot just after Easter by director Ray Kay (Lady Gaga, Britney Spears) and was described by a source as "everything you would expect to get from a classic Aerosmith video ... pure, classic Steven Tyler in all of his rock star glory." Rumors say it features a cameo from former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger.

Tyler is on a promotional circuit to push his new memoir, "Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?" due out Tuesday (May 3).

Don't miss "Idol Party Live" every Thursday on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke. Get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Why You So Angry About a Picture of a Penguin? (Or: I Think the Fleet Foxes Feature Is Funny.)

haterz.jpg

Some of y'all got a little upset about the way Grant Brissey covered the new Fleet Foxes record:

Kris says: "This is completely retarded. Show some love for a rad local band."

Roger11 says: "Your music section is lame and out of touch. Luckily, we have a lot of interesting music blogs, written by people who actually enjoy music to fill the void."

letired says: "This is a truly awful piece of music 'journalism.' You should have just printed the pictures of cute animals, at least that would have had some redeeming value."

Well, I thought it was funny. The peacock was probably my favorite part ("Strutting.") with the giraffe being a close second. But if you want WORDS about the Fleet Foxes, well, we've already done that here, here, here, here, here, and here. Oh, and then they wrote for us here and here.

And in response to those comments calling for more attention to local bands and things written by people who "actually enjoy music," well, we do that too! Did you know that in every issue of The Stranger there is very often more than one article? It's true!

Just a couple pages away from Grant's Fleet Foxes feature, Kurt B. Reighly wrote a whole bunch of words about how great LOCAL duo Thousands are. If you like the Fleet Foxes, you'll probably like them. In fact, you should go see their show tonight. And Grant already posted a bunch of other music-related things you'll read in this week's issue.

And if you want to back it up even further, in the last month Dave Segal and Kelly O put together a great photo essay on Stop Biting's weekly breakdancing night at Lo-Fi (not a single picture of a fox to be seen!), Brissey gave some love to a new local band My Goodness, Trent Moorman interviewed Macklemore after he performed his Dave Neihaus tribute at the Mariners' opening day, Segal wrote a great music feature about local audio engineer Kearney Barton, and I don't have time to look up all the U&Cs where we've written about local bands, but this week alone you can read about the Royal Bear, Kithkin, the local record label ggnzla, the Head and the Heart, Throw Me the Statue, BOAT, Boy Eats Drum Machine, Wonderful, Big World Breaks, Cali Giraffes (formerly known as the Calligraphers—they rule!), and MORE. All by people who love music!

tl;dr: Really, I just wanted an excuse to photoshop that picture of a Siamang.

Song of the Day: Angry Kids feat. Nik Kershaw - "Wouldn't It Be Good"

In an excellent redux of the 80's track originally performed by Nik Kershaw, The Angry Kids have followed up "Annie Taylor" featuring The Lives of Famous Men. Nik climbs back onto vocals for this amp'ed up version featuring trancy synth production and a dance rock edge, and it truly showcases the strength of the songwriting that Kershaw put into the original. The track sounds fresh and current with Nik's feel-good vocals and The Angry Kids ample talent in production. But taking it to the next level is the So You remix, stripping down many of the layers to leave just a compelling dance rock track. While the album version of the track, at just over 5 minutes, feels like a natural length and is engaging throughout, the So You remix is best kept at radio length as the near 6-minute extended mix has a lot of dead space within it. The energy of the radio version makes it perfect for airplay, so hopefully you catch this on your favorite dance radio station soon. The cute new video will hopefully make its way onto MTV, oops, make that 100 million hits on Youtube.

No no, not the ramblin' rose. Rosie the ROSEMARY. That little splotch of green near the foot of the step, between the rose bush and the new back fence.

American Idol Top 6 - Results!

*SPOILER WARNING*

Eliminated:
Casey Abrams

There was no bottom three announced per se, the contestants were called up individually and were told if they were safe or not. But if it makes a difference and you want to know what went on, I'll break it down shortly: Haley was called up first and Ryan told her she was safe. Scotty, Lauren and Casey were called up one by one after that but they were all told to hang on for a while. James followed and was declared safe. Jacob was up last, Ryan asked Scotty, Lauren and Casey to join him. Lauren was told she was safe; leaving Scotty, Jacob and Casey standing. Were they the bottom 3? We don't know... the words "bottom 3" were never used on the show tonight, although I'd like to believe it was. Jacob was then called as safe, leaving Casey and Scotty.

Interesting fact! This is the first time in three years that two girls make it to the top five. Yup. The last two to make it there were Brooke White and Syesha Mercado in season seven.

It's almost here again - PIANO SHIRT FRIDAY at Jazz Fest!...

Yes, we KNOW it's an accordion shirt!  The 2011 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival opens up on Friday, but we won't be rolling into the Big Easy until the following Wednesday evening (Gumbo flying in from the Great Northleft on Thursday).  Already the problems emerge, Gumbo getting a call from the our hotel telling us we've been bumped and have been reassigned to an adjacent hotel.  So, I go online to read up about our new home and - YIKES - the comments are downright nasty!  I have a feeling that the iconic Mother's Restaurant (corner of Poydras/Tchoupitoulas), currently embroiled in a prickly feud with equally iconic Johnny Gumbo over a tardy oyster po' boy, has retaliated.

Australia continues to crank out the fantastic imports.  This time it is duo Tim and Jean who do an excellent impersonation of Passion Pit.  Their sunny and breezy synthpop is the perfect accompaniment to just about anything, and their new single "I Can Show You" is so carefree and easy that you just want to sing along while strolling down the street.  The beat and production make "I Can Show You" an easy target for more aggressive remixes, and maintains the flow they began with "Come Around".  If they continue to release quality pop like this, it won't be long before intelligent folks from other countries start to take notice.  Until then, grab your portable MP3 device, and go for a stroll.

Science Friday: Coriolis Effect does NOT affect water drains/indirectly affects tornadoes

So I’m thinking that some Fridays I’m gonna steal NPR’s “Science Friday” idea and write a post debunking some popular myths. Not gonna happen every Friday, but I’m gonna make a pointed effort to do it somewhat often. Today we’ll tackle the myth about water spinning in opposite directions down the drain in the northern [...]

We've Got It Covered #48

This weeks cover comes from a band who I featured as part of my Fresh Meat Monday posts a few weeks back. They were kind enough to share a cover they recorded a while ago of an old Italodisco song by Charlie called "Spacer Woman". If this tickles yer fancy then you can catch them live tomorrow night at the Get A Room Festival at the Brunswick Hotel in Glasgow alongside an array of local talent including Bad McNulty (formerly B-Line Movie Junkees), Fangs and Woodenbox with a fustful of fivers.

Breaking News: Osama Bin Laden is Dead!

Osama bin Laden is dead, according to reports.

The 54-year-old leader of the al Qaeda terrorist network was reportedly captured and killed as a result of a U.S. operation. President Barack Obama will make the announcement Sunday night (May 1) during an impromptu announcement broadcast.

This comes almost a decade after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

President Obama began his speech by stating:

"Tonight I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that has killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda."

Bachelor Girl

BacheloretteBachelorette
From: Christchurch, New York, United States

After Newcastle (see feature Newcastle United), Christchurch is the next most featured city outside of the US on this year's Devil's blog. Following on from the recent feature on City Kids Records (Christ You Know It Ain't Easy) today's post is on the oddly captivating home recording tinkerer Annabel Alpers aka Bachelorette.

Annabel has a sound all of her own, a sound that just has to be heard to be believed. The nearest thing I can get to the normal blogger's over simplification is she sounds like long lost Mute electro popsters The Silicon Teens crawling out of Syd Barrett's skin. But don't take my word for it go listen for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

Mariah Carey And Nick Cannon Welcome Twins

Babies were born on the couple's anniversary.

Talk about your perfect timing. Mariah Carey gave birth to twins on Saturday morning, which also happened to be her third wedding anniversary. The boy and girl were born at around 9 a.m. Los Angeles time and weighed just over five pounds each, according to Carey's spokesperson.

The singer, 41, and husband Nick Cannon, 30, were married on April 30, 2008, and spokesperson Cindi Berger said in a statement, "babies were born on their wedding anniversary ... not even Mariah could plan that!" Berger said the girl was born first and then the boy, but that their names have not yet been revealed.

Singer/actor Cannon was ecstatic about the birth, tweeting, "my wife just gave me the most incredible anniversary gift ever in life! I won't ever be able to top this!" He later added, "I'm in the happiest place I've ever been in my life. I never had more amazing things happening. I am humbled by God's favor."

Cannon drove Carey to the hospital in their Rolls-Royce Phantom, according to Berger, who described the singer as calm after going through false labor previously. The dad-to-be, however, was so nervous he went to the wrong department at the hospital and then had to be guided to the maternity ward by a nurse.

"It was like right out of an 'I Love Lucy' skit," said Berger. The couple listened to Carey's "We Belong Together" after the twins were born and were expected to renew their vows on Sunday.

The happy couple got plenty of well-wishes on Twitter, with Nicki Minaj writing, "Congratulations Mariah & Nick!!!!!!!!! The twins have finally landed on earth!!! Yaaayyyyy!!!!! @MariahCarey mmmuuuuaaahhhh!!!!!!"

Her old pals and musical partners in Boyz II Men added, "Just got the news! Congrats Mr and Mrs Cannon on ur twin babies!! Look forward to sleepless nights for the next few weeks, trust me lol!" Super-producer Rodney Jerkins wrote, "Congratulations to @MariahCarey and @NickCannon May God bless you and the 2 lil ones!!! Rj and @OfficialJoy." Jermaine Dupri tweeted, "CONGRATS!!! to Nick and @mariahcarey on the birth of a baby girl and boy," and pregnant actress Alyssa Milano " target="_blank">wrote, "Congrats! @MariahCarey & @NickCannon celebrate 4th anniversary becoming parents: http://mariah.is/mlSnAj /via @lil_red_man."

Video: The Wrong Words ? ?Wrong Again?

As a nerd, the ending to The Wrong Words‘ new video for “Wrong Again” stings a bit, but the song’s power-pop-done-right helps ease the pain. The band is at Cafe Du Nord on May 11th with Bare Wires and Tropical Sleep.
