I still remember being served by Pete Burns (lead singer of Dead or Alive and tabloid TV star) in Probe Records in Liverpool. I remember Tudor Records in Walton where I bought a lot of rare vinyl in the early 80s based on the recommendations of the staff who knew what I liked. You don't get memories like that from clicking a mouse, you don't get personal service like that from visiting a website.
Well tomorrow it's Record Store Day again, the one day of the year when independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances.
To celebrate international Record Store Day UK alt-folksters The Daydream Club (graduates of Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) have released a vinyl only single 'The Record Shop', a tribute to the golden years of vinyl and independent record stores. It reflects on the current state of the industry, noting the demise in value of the physical product in favour of digital technologies.
Remember record shops are for life not just Record Store Day. You gotta use them or lose them.
