The Vinyl Solution

Ten years ago there were more than 1,000 independent record shops in the UK. In 2011 there are less than 300. So what you may say, I can download all the music I could ever listen to from the comfort of my own home. Well you're missing the point entirely. Independent record shops are not simple retail environments. They're communities (real communities not social networks of people you've never met) , they're meeting points, they're places you can go to uncover music that is far from the mainstream.

I still remember being served by Pete Burns (lead singer of Dead or Alive and tabloid TV star) in Probe Records in Liverpool. I remember Tudor Records in Walton where I bought a lot of rare vinyl in the early 80s based on the recommendations of the staff who knew what I liked. You don't get memories like that from clicking a mouse, you don't get personal service like that from visiting a website.

Well tomorrow it's Record Store Day again, the one day of the year when independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances.

To celebrate international Record Store Day UK alt-folksters The Daydream Club (graduates of Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) have released a vinyl only single 'The Record Shop', a tribute to the golden years of vinyl and independent record stores. It reflects on the current state of the industry, noting the demise in value of the physical product in favour of digital technologies.

Remember record shops are for life not just Record Store Day. You gotta use them or lose them.

Cheltenham jazz festival

Various venues, Cheltenham

An American saxophone legend wearing the mantle of John Coltrane, a virtuosic British duo working the cracks between jazz and modern chamber-music, and a star jazz eccentric were among Saturday's confirmations of the Cheltenham jazz festival's enduring instinct for quality.

The chamber-duo was the intimately congenial partnership of saxophonist Julian Arguelles and pianist John Taylor, which delivered its intricate time-jugglings and melodic switches in the afternoon. Taylor's ambiguous harmonies and Arguelles's penchant for long-lined melodies can leave the music without explicit anchor-points at times, but the pair's gospelly account of In the Bleak Midwinter provided plenty.

The 70-year-old Arkansas tenor saxist Pharoah Sanders, Coltrane's firebreathing tenor partner in his final 60s bands, left much of the work to his inspired local rhythm section in the evening, but they ran with it so dynamically as to resoundingly wake the legend up. A poignant account of the ballad Naima, a honking, bass-walking blues workout and a yearning My Favourite Things all showed that Sanders charisma is still intact.

Later on, Django Bates delivered a new Radio 3 commission of typically spiky and affably eccentric swing ? inspiring his band (augmenting the Kit Downes electric trio Troyka with horns) to play raucously bumpy riffs over low electronic churnings, mind-boggling polyrhythms, or cheery circus-band struts bursting out of free-improv squeals. It's yet another sound-palette for an already prolific composer currently on perhaps the biggest roll of his career.

Riverboat Gamblers Announce Additional 2011 Tour Dates

Texas punk rock powerhouse Riverboat Gamblers have announced additional dates for their 2011 tour with Off With Their Heads and Dead To Me.

The Riverboat Gamblers are currently camped out in Austin writing and preparing to record the follow up to 2009's Underneath the Owl.

Longtime favorites here, the Gamblers are known for unpredictable, out of control live sets, and frontman Mike Wiebe spends as much time in the crowd as he does on stage. This tour will be one of the best that 2011 has to offer.

Tour dates are listed below.

The Quentin Collins/Brandon Allen Quartet: What's it Gonna Be? ? review

(Sunlightsquare)

Trumpet, tenor saxophone, organ and drums? Must be retro hard-bop in the classic Blue Note mould. Er, not exactly. Collins certainly plays bright, crackling trumpet and Allen's tenor is declamatory in the grand manner, but there's a restlessness about this band's music that defies expectations. Instead of grooving comfortably along, the drums (Enzo Zirilli) chatter away busily and the organ (Ross Stanley) produces sudden changes of register and great washes of harmonic colour. The compositions, Collins's especially, keep you guessing, too. It's disconcerting but wonderfully energising, once you get over the surprise.
