Eliza Carthy: Neptune ? review

(Hem Hem)

Carthy has always resisted being corralled into a folk ghetto ? remember her drum'n'bass album back in '98? ? and the self-penned Neptune sets her supple vocals to arrangements that borrow from cabaret, tango, music hall and reggae. A more live-in-studio affair than 2008's Dreams of Breathing Underwater, it's also an autobiographical song cycle of Carthy's last decade, crammed with domestic bust-ups - "blood on the ceiling!" ? and torch ballads such as "Romeo", plus the odd political rant ("Britain Is a Car Park"). Its weepier moments cast Eliza as a 50s matinee pin-up but its songs are mostly fearless and uproarious, like their creator. A quirky confessional. .

Last night at City Winery in NYC...

Shelby Lynne: Not Nashville--- nuanced (cliffviewpilot.com)
IN TUNE: Shelby Lynne isn't cut out for cookie-cutter country, for which an adoring throng at City Winery was ever-so-grateful. More Bonnie Raitt or Norah Jones than Faith Hill, Lynne culls her brand of American roots music from Austin, New Orleans, and other points south of pop-craved Nashville. It did a number on her, that town, before she bolted for Palm Springs in 1998. But her transformation and renewal yielded a straight-up artist whose intimate, faith-fueled, 90-minute set will be tough to shake. (more

Paul Walker Says Brazilian People Were 'Excited' To Host 'Fast Five'

'I love to travel, and that's one of those places that, on my own, I would have never have ventured,' he tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

For those heading to the theaters this weekend to see the action-packed, souped-up-car-gasmic "Fast Five," there are only a few things you should know going in: The cast is teeming with members from all four previous films (Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris are all back) and the movie was filmed all over the world, including in Puerto Rico, Arizona, Georgia and California, but mainly in and around the illustrious city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — including the storied and dangerous favela districts.

When MTV News caught up with Walker, we asked him how the crew managed to get clearance to film in such tough areas.

"That's the best part about the job, is we have a VIP card," Walker said of the production's exempt status. "For most people, especially the tourists, the favela is off limits, but we got permission basically from the drug lords to come up there and film," he revealed. "We got cops with us, but everyone knows the reason we're there isn't because the cops said, 'Go ahead and come up and in'; it's the cooperation with the drug lords."

Walker said he hung out with people from the area, as did the film crew, and everyone had a great time during the shoot.

"That's one of the best aspects of my job. I'm up there hanging out, and the people are friendly and I don't have anything to worry about. People are just excited we're there," he said. "I love to travel, and that's one of those places that, on my own, I would have never have ventured, but because we're here doing this, it made it all possible."

Check out everything we've got on "Fast Five."

The Conductor

The conductor makes sure that the music piece is interpreted properly by acting as the guide to the musicians or singers. He chooses and studies the music score, may make certain adjustments to it and relay his ideas to the performers so that when the music is played, there is unity and harmony. He schedules rehearsals, plans the orchestra's repertoire and attends to other matters concerning the group he leads.

This Day in Music History: 1961 - Luciano Pavarotti had his operatic debut as Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème. When he was young Pavarotti wanted to become a soccer star. He was a school teacher before he decided to dedicate his life to singing.

Yo Pat, where are ya?

Pat Robertson is famous for saying that natural disasters are a "punishment from God". He said that about Katrina, he said that about the Haiti earthquake, and so forth. Glenn Beck similarly loves saying that natural disasters are "messages" from God.

So today I eagerly await their pronouncements on the tornados that flattened portions of the South this week. Waiting for them to say these tornados were a punishment from God in three... two... one...

Oh WAIT A MINUTE, I forgot, it's only a punishment from God if it's DARKIES getting flattened, not if it's good god fearin' WHITE folk! Sheesh, what was I thinkin?

American Idol Top 6 [What They Performed]

Week's Theme:
Carole King

Performances:
Jacob Lusk- "Oh No, Not My Baby"
Lauren Alaina- "Where You Lead"
Casey Abrams & Haley Reinhart- "I Feel the Earth Move"
Scotty McCreery- "You've Got a Friend"
James Durbin- "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow"
Lauren Alaina & Scotty McCreery- "Up on the Roof"
Casey Abrams- "Hi-De-Ho"
Haley Reinhart- "Beautiful"
James Durbin & Jacob Lusk- "I'm Into Something Good"

The Best Damn Blog thinks:
I've been against a male winning this season from the beginning, but James is making me change my mind! If a man were to win this season, James is it! Jennifer said it, he's been consistent from the start and Randy said he might be the one to win the whole thing. I agree! But anyway, on to tomorrow's bottom three, I think it's obvious the bottom three will be Jacob, Casey and Haley with Jacob going home. I would change Haley with Scotty in the bottom three though, but no way in hell that's happening. I don't get Scotty's appeal to be honest.

Father of Digital Music, Max Mathews, Dies at 84 (Mashable)

Mashable - The forerunner to Dan Deacon, Project Jenny, Project Jan and myriad other bands of that ilk has passed away. Max Mathews, widely known as the progenitor of digital music, died Thursday of pneumonia.
Mathews wrote a program called "Music" in 1957 that allowed an IBM 704 mainframe computer to play a 17-second jam. He also developed other electronic music software and devices as an engineer at Bell Laboratories.

Song of the Day: Hannah & Miami Calling - "Taking Over Now"

Continuing her string of club- and dance radio-ready tracks, Hannah teams up with Miami Calling on "Taking Over Now".  Miami Calling also happens to be one half of Bimbo Jones, and while the track has a slight "Bromance" vibe from Tim Berg, the production definitely bears some of the hallmarks of Bimbo Jones' style.  The collaboration works in everyone's favor as Hannah's voice has never sounded better, and Miami Calling give us an anthem for the summer months.  Contrasting the original Miami Calling production is Bimbo Jones' actual remix which sacks the summery vibe in favor of some serious growly electro on top of Hannah's voice.  Dr. Kucho simplifies the song with a happy handclap beat and a plucky take on the melody, giving Kryder the most aggressive mix of the bunch with a driving beat and more emphasis on the synths of the track.  Honestly, you can't lose with any mix, so expect "Taking Over Now" to be...well...taking over now.

Greetings from up north

I would just like to apologise to anyone who has emailed me over the past few days and hasn't heard back from me yet, I have been up north visiting my parents and have avoided turning on my laptop for a good few days. Now that I have logged in, I have a shed load of emails to work through. So to make my job that bit easier I thought I'd bring you all of the worthy news to you in one big handy post. So without further ado here we go...

First off we have the launch of Communion in Glasgow on Thursday the 28th of April. Originally founded by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons fame, former Cherbourg bassist Kevin Jones and acclaimed producer Ian Grimble, Communion originally started way back in 2006 in London. The original premise of the evening was to provide a new platform for those within the London-scene, which unearthed both Laura Marling and Example.

In the years that have followed, Communion has expanded, with nights being put on across the UK and internationally as far and wide as New York and Sydney. Taking the blueprint of what has made Communion work so well Communion Records was founded in September 2009 priding themselves with working and cultivating a family of artists featuring Rachel Sermanni, Mumford and Son?s to Johnny Flynn.

On the 28th of April the night makes it first appearance in Glasgow with a headline show from Communion artist Ben Howard, plus support from Washington Irving and Kitty The Lion. Tickets for the gig are on sale now for the very reasonable sum of 7, you can pick one up here.

Further details on Communion can be found here.

I am no sure if I have any readers who come from Fort William, but it would be rude of me not to mention an festival that's taking place up there. It's called Rock The Fort and it takes place from 30 April ? 6 May, featuring The Mystic Shoes, Kitty The Lion and Homework. Further details on what's going on can be found here.

A lovely lady called Heather recently got in touch with me as she is putting together a Glasgow music compilation for her third year University project. The album features an array of local talent including Crayons, Tempercalm, Weather Barn, The Hardy Boys, Dilectrics, Sing-Kill-Worth, The Imagineers, Skies Fell, Carnivores, Pacific Theare and more. The official launch night for the album takes place tonight at Stereo in Glasgow, featuring Crayons, Tempecalm, Weather Barn, Sonic Hearts Foundation and Dilectrics. More information on the night can be found here.

Admiral Fallow have announced an array of shows across the UK, kicking off with a show at the Euphonios stage at this years Great Escape Festival in Brighton, alongside Peenko favourite Dems. The tour also sees them making appearances at this Stag & Dagger Festival in Glasgow, Glastonbury, Green Man Festival, before returning to Scotland in August for a show at the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh as part of the Edge Festival. All of the dates can be found on their Myspace, plus there recently re-released album 'Boots Met My Face' is available to buy here.

The Doune The Rabbit Hole organisers continue to add an array of local talent for this years festival. Joining the likes of Mungos Hifi, The Vaselines, Mike Heron and Trembling Bells are the fantastic BMX Bandits, Randolph's Leap, RM Hubbert and loads of other great acts. You can find out more on their website.

Opera and the voice: once more with meaning

The opera voice needs an overhaul, argues Dominic Muldowney. Can we find a better way for actors to sing and singers to act?

I often find myself telling the story of my father, who spent his days driving buses but his evenings listening to opera on 78 records. He and my mother would sit in a rapture listening mainly to arias, mainly those sung by tenors, and mainly by the great early 20th-century Italian singer Beniamino Gigli.

They had little idea of what the tenor sang. What mattered was the beauty of sound. Mystified, I would ask, "Why are they singing?" This was my first experience of music, and for all kinds of Oedipal reasons no doubt, it revolted and horrified me.

I have spent a lifetime writing songs, song cycles, opera and oratorio. My 25 years as music director of the National Theatre, though, made me wary of writing for the operatic voice with its strained vowels, the "scream" of the high soprano and the strangulated sound in the tenor's throat.

Nowadays, I read reviews that describe a soprano's "smooth, creamy, silky" voice, or her "brilliantly shining" top, the mezzo's "velvety" middle and the baritone's "dark and lustrous resonance". Like the parched traveller offered fine wine, I want to shout: "Slake my thirst before you pamper my palate." Seldom do you read of how the text was managed, if it was even intelligible. Sometimes the review contains a line about audibility (usually mistermed "diction") and the need (or not, confusingly) for surtitles ? that sadly hopeful add-on of the modern opera house.

Working in the theatre, I discovered Brecht, who described music as "the sister muse": a sibling, not a superior art. Of equal importance was the word:  what was being sung, not just how it was being sung. I came to prefer the actor-singer's voice to the operatically trained one. I am not talking of the belting "musical theatre" voice, with its mid-Atlantic twang and sentimental vibrato, but the actor approaching the song as another form of dramatic text, and investing more in communicating its meaning than in making the so-called "beautiful sound".

The opera house doesn't seem to have had its "Look Back in Anger moment", as the theatre did in 1956, when deference to old habits ? especially vocal ones ? were shed overnight. Modern opera still sounds 19th-century, although it may not look it. One of the reasons why opera appears so radically a designer's and director's theatre today is because somewhere, somehow, the edifice needs a complete overhaul. The core of opera ? the voice ? seems not to have changed in hundreds of years.

The reason always given is that it needs to be heard over a large orchestra. But in a time of leaner budgets, perhaps we might look forward to leaner voices. We might find singers who refuse to use Italian vowels for English ones, who don't avoid regional accents with their clutter of so-called ugly diphthongs, and who feel compelled to make sense of the words. Opera directors increasingly ask their singers to "take care" of the sense, but at the rehearsal stage it is too late ? surely it is the composers' responsibility? After all, it is they who supposedly wanted to set the text: why set it if it cannot be understood?

I have been running a course for three years at the Royal Opera House for anyone interested in writing for the voice in a theatrical context, from students and singers to established composers. One of the first things I ask participants to do is to play some of their favourite songs, and then talk about why they chose them, and what in the singing they found attractive. Interestingly, out of about 60 tracks played this year, only three were from opera. The rest were by folk, pop and cabaret artists. The communicative skills of Frank Sinatra or the naive directness of John McCormack were more often relished than the selfish wobble of many a soprano.

Over the year, the composers write new material of their own, beginning with solo songs and graduating to more complex dramatic scenes, and on to full "music theatre" works. Here lies another problem ? the hunt for a word to replace "opera". Composers simply do not want the baggage associated with the word, but are still interested in putting music, text and drama on the stage.

We ask if we can we sing our language without the perverse alteration of vowel sounds, or let the text be heard without recourse to snapped consonants ? that curse of the politely voiced cathedral tenor with his "Go......D" or "Lor......D!" How are directors, performers, librettists and composers to find a better way for actors to sing and singers to act, and an uncluttered, direct, modern music theatre to emerge?

The collaboration of composer and singer can often become a collusion. It can feel as if the composer is really writing for a clarinet and not a woman, a cello and not a man, and the singers are ready to collude with this as they can revert to the unquestioning habits of their training ? showing off the smoothness across their "break" and their easy reach of the high and the low. But what is created has nothing to do with sense, or a depiction of human experience. This failure to communicate would not be tolerated in contemporary theatre.

But things are changing. Just recently I have seen a few brave attempts at pushing the boundaries of ? let us call it ? "theatre singing". In the recent OperaShots series at London's Linbury Studio, Stewart Copeland's contribution The Tell-Tale Heart made an interesting stab at how to unpack a lot of sung narration essential to understanding the Edgar Allan Poe story that was Copeland's text. There was a well-judged use of more than one voice in charge of this narration ? a sung one and a half-spoken one ? what Brecht called sprechstimme. Interesting, too, was the casting of Richard Suart ? well known as a Gilbert and Sullivan singer. Whatever you think of the Savoy operetta, you have to admire the space Sullivan allowed the verbal virtuosity of his librettist; experience in this form gave Suart a marvellous clarity.

Another interesting piece currently at the National's Cottesloe is London Road, a "documentary musical" with words by Alecky Blythe and music by Adam Cork. Given that it's about the Ipswich prostitute murders, based on verbatim reports of ordinary men and women, it's amazing that it ever reached the stage. This is not arioso-based opera, but it is almost entirely sung. The singing hovers between monotone and biting choric set-pieces that give voice to the demotic words that are expressing the tragedy. The actors sing the Suffolk accent with all its hesitations, ums and ahs, yet behave musically as if they were in an oratorio, where the tension between prosaic naturalism and heightened singing is the conceit.

As in these two examples, any successful new music theatre will have to address the balance between text and music, and look to new techniques in composition, singing and speaking.

Years of working in theatre has brought me full circle. If the text is not to be heard and nourished alongside the sound it makes, then, in the words of the five-year-old I was 50 years ago, I might well ask today's young composers and singers, "Why sing?"

nOSTalgie, an evening of political songs and new vocal settings, with musical direction by Dominic Muldowney, is performed by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group at CBSO on 21 May. Details: bcmg.org.uk

Balls to the Wall and/or My Ex Boyfriend is Armed and Dangerous

Who saw old-timers, German metalheads Accept last night at El Corazón? I really wanted to go for nostalgia sake. This morning, with coffee, I happily listened to a voicemail from a friend (thanks Amy!) who called me from the show during "Balls To The Wall".

No, see last night, instead of going to the show, I pulled a three+ hour phone marathon with family back in Michigan. Seems a family friend—my long time ago ex-boyfriend—lost his fucking mind yesterday... somehow thought he was some kinda Matt Dillion. He put a crazy-ass mosquito net thing on his head, and marched into a small town drug store with an arsenal of guns. He didn't hurt anybody (of course, that guy wouldn't hurt a fly), but he did take every last bit of Oxycontin they had.

Today, the cops think he's hiding out in the woods. His family and friends hope he's in a car, headed for the mean streets of Detroit. Either scenario, his balls are in a vice.

Watch the damned (God bless ya)
They're gonna break their chains
You can't stop them (God bless ya)
They're coming to get you and then

You'll get your balls to the wall, man
Balls to the wall
You'll get your balls to the wall, man
Balls to the wall - balls to the wall

Hurt love

Devics, "Stretch Out Your Arms", off of their album The Stars at Saint Andrea. Yet another sad, beautiful torch song from Sara Lov and Dustin O'Halloran... Sara Lov was born a generation too late for her calling. Just sayin'.

(more

Unfortunately, virtually none of the gear remains there. If you're not equipped with enough gear to outfit a recording studio, it looks like it would also make an excellent bunker to establish your own sovereign nation.

That birth certificate thang

Obama releases his long-form birth certificate.

Will the release of this document change the mind of birthers? Of course not. World Nut Daily already doubled down on the crazy and announced, "Even Hawaii birth won't make Obama eligible". Other birthers like Oily Taitz swiftly followed suit. Because no document in the world will ever make Obama eligible to be President in their eyes, because no document in the world will ever turn Obama white.

"Lara Logan thought she was going to die in Tahrir Square when she was sexually assaulted by a mob on..."

?Lara Logan thought she was going to die in Tahrir Square when she was sexually assaulted by a mob on the night that Hosni Mubarak?s government fell in Cairo.

Ms. Logan, a CBS News correspondent, was in the square preparing a report for ?60 Minutes? on Feb. 11 when the celebratory mood suddenly turned threatening. She was ripped away from her producer and bodyguard by a group of men who tore at her clothes and groped and beat her body. ?For an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands,? Ms. Logan said in an interview with The New York Times. She estimated that the attack lasted for about 40 minutes and involved 200 to 300 men. Ms. Logan, who returned to work this month, is expected to speak at length about the assault on ?60 Minutes? on Sunday night.?

- Lara Logantold the NYT about her experience in detail. She will be on ?60 Minutes? this Sunday. -@brianstelter

F&M Playlist

Our music team pick the songs or albums, old or new, they just can't turn off

Charlie Haden Quartet West Sophisticated Ladies The great American bassist and bandleader Charlie Haden, a key figure in Ornette Coleman's free-jazz revolution of the 50s and 60s, has been running his more lyrical and song-celebrating ensemble Quartet West for 25 years. This session has a standard-song repertoire, but with an all-star cast interpreting it in addition to Haden's subtly-swinging group ? the six guest singers being Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Melody Gardot, Norah Jones, Renee Fleming and Haden's wife Ruth Cameron. John Fordham

Fatoumata Diawara Kanou Born in Mali, and based in Paris, Diawara deserves to become the next African celebrity, with her easy-going folky style, backed by her acoustic guitar work. This is from her debut EP, released next month. Robin Denselow

X-Ray Spex I Live Off You I could have picked so many tracks to remember Poly Styrene, but this one always touched me: not just the message about exploitation, but the quiver of vulnerability in her voice. One of British music's true originals. Dave Simpson

The Undisputed Truth Big John Is My Name Norman Whitfield's psychedelic funk project with a glorious slab of proto-disco from 1974. The beefy baritone makes the title character sound huge and cartoonish, halfway between nightlife king and Marvel Comics heavy. Tom Ewing

Kylie Minogue Nothing Can Stop Us Originally a B-side on Kylie's 1994 Confide In Me single, this unlikely cover of one of Saint Etienne's finest songs appears on a bonus edition of her fifth album, which is now on Spotify. Her lush, richly-orchestrated version is actually rather better than I remember it. Chris Salmon

The Zombies Breathe Out, Breathe In The Zombies are back with a new studio album and an unexpected new direction. There's a great deal of Steely Dan about the songs; I had to check the label more than once to make sure the lush harmonies and jazz-rock arrangements weren't actually the work of Becker and Fagen. Caroline Sullivan

Bleeding Knees Club Have Fun The latest bunch of Antipodeans to decamp to London in search of fame are a garage rock duo bearing a terrible name and a single of ferocious, fizzing infectiousness. Michael Hann

Miss Fire Rock Ur World The British urban club scene is notoriously London-centric, but Leicester's Miss Fire has emerged as a must-follow artist. Both producer and vocalist, she's equally adept making sleek, propulsive house and ? as here ? irresistibly summery R&B that evokes happy memories of prime Mis-Teeq. Alex Macpherson
