(Hem Hem)
Carthy has always resisted being corralled into a folk ghetto ? remember her drum'n'bass album back in '98? ? and the self-penned Neptune sets her supple vocals to arrangements that borrow from cabaret, tango, music hall and reggae. A more live-in-studio affair than 2008's Dreams of Breathing Underwater, it's also an autobiographical song cycle of Carthy's last decade, crammed with domestic bust-ups - "blood on the ceiling!" ? and torch ballads such as "Romeo", plus the odd political rant ("Britain Is a Car Park"). Its weepier moments cast Eliza as a 50s matinee pin-up but its songs are mostly fearless and uproarious, like their creator. A quirky confessional. .
