A promising new instrumental act has popped up in Seattle, and it goes by the name of Gems. Sporting an unconventional setup of two drummers and two synth operators, Gems hit you with heavy grooves and polyrhythmic interplay while Moog-generated liquid-sex bass lines and champagne bubble-leads seduce you to the dance floor. If you need references, think DJ Shadow harvesting the love juices of a Kraftwerk-lubricated ménage à trois between Tangerine Dream, Funkadelic, and Boards of Canada. If you need a genre label, call it Fantasy-Beat.
The band will be celebrating the release of its new self-titled EP at the Sunset Tavern tonight. Drummer Adrian Van Batenburg was nice enough to answer a few pre-release show questions for me:
What's up with the double drummers / double synth player format? How did this come about, and will it ever expand to adding "twins" of other instruments - such as two bass players or dueling mandolins?
We have been friends for a long time…all playing in different bands. One day we decided to try the 2 drummer thing. The groove was big and it sounded great — never looked back. The synths are an extension of the 70's & 80's. Interesting sounds, fun to turn knobs. Perhaps we will have dueling mandolins, and little risers for them to stand on.
How much are you selling this new EP for, and is there any song on it that you like the most? Do you mind if I post an mp3?
$5. My favorite [song on the EP] is “Special Problems.” It was a bitch to get tight, but once it did, it popped. And, of course, the funny steel pan sounds make me laugh. Post that or what you want.
